Growing up in Shaker Heights, where I had access to a diverse and transformative education, taught me to value inclusion, equity, and the power of learning to create opportunity and drive change.

Melinda Kassen, Class of 1974, practiced law for 40 years, first prosecuting domestic violence cases, and then focused on Western water quality and water management. She represented non-profit conservation organizations advocating for healthy rivers, as well as several Colorado agencies. Melinda now volunteers as a victim advocate, teaching older adult short courses and in the Jewish community.

Shaker was by no means perfect, but it was more diverse than almost all the places I’ve lived since. And, I took advantage of as much of what it offered that interested me as I had time for.
