Fernway Students Build Understanding During Blindness Awareness Month
Second graders at Fernway Elementary School recently welcomed the Cleveland Sight Center for an engaging, hands-on lesson about visual impairments, made possible with support from the Shaker Schools Foundation.
Students had the opportunity to meet a guide dog, learn helpful dos and don’ts for interacting with people who are blind or visually impaired, and experience vision simulators to better understand how vision loss can affect everyday life. The visit also featured a children’s picture book with Braille, based on a true story by an Ohio resident that was presented to the students as a video.
The experience helped students build awareness, empathy, and understanding while learning how to better support and include a classmate who is legally blind. Your generous donations allow educational opportunities like this that helps open doors to learning, compassion, and inclusion for Shaker students.
Thanks to funding from the Shaker Schools Foundation, our 2nd graders enjoyed a transformative visit from the Cleveland Sight Center to learn about visual impairment, accessibility, and inclusion. Students explored inclusive strategies firsthand, including auditory cues, cane skills, guide dog etiquette, and modified sound-based sports equipment. Most importantly, students are already applying these lessons in the classroom—interacting with greater empathy and noticing braille and accessible design across our school grounds.
