I can’t stress enough the importance and appreciation I have for Ms. Mayen and the draping lesson she gave us.

Opens doors for Shaker students
Our Shaker Heights High School Fashion Design students had a unique opportunity to learn from Valerie Mayén, a Cleveland-based fashion designer, founder and CEO of Yellowcake Shop Clothing, and Project Runway Season 8 alumna.
Known for her innovative draping techniques and distinctive winter coat designs, Mayén led a hands-on workshop that introduced students to professional design methods and creative problem solving. Our students attended the City Club Forum at the City Club of Cleveland where she was recognized as a thought leader in entrepreneurship as part of the Ronald B. Cohen Forum on Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Students described the experience as both inspiring and practical. They shared that learning from a working artist highlighted how different designers approach the same craft, helping them expand their creative perspectives. Students also noted the lasting value of the experience, emphasizing that the draping skills they gained can be applied for years to come, whether pursuing careers in fashion or using the skill creatively in everyday life.
I thought the draping class with Valerie Mayen was very helpful for my education in fashion. I think it would be amazing for future classes and I think it would be valuable if we had more artists come in to teach.
The 2 hours it took to teach us how to drape has provided my classmates and I with a skill that we’ll use for years to come, whether that be a daily practice for those who go on to become the fashion designers of tomorrow, or those in any other field, who might simply want to create a gift for a friend or a piece for ourselves.”
