Shaker Alumni Hilary Beard and Carter Bays

The Shaker Schools Foundation announces two exciting opportunities to hear from talented Shaker alumni as part of Shaker Speaks: A Series of Intimate Conversations Featuring Unique Shaker Voices.

Both events will take place via Zoom. Participants can choose to attend at no cost or for a suggested donation of $20 per household with proceeds benefiting Shaker students. Students, parents, alumni, staff and community members are all welcome to attend. Registration is required to get the Zoom link.

Hidden History Revealed with Hilary Beard

On Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 7 pm ET, Hilary Beard, Class of 1980, will lead an eye-opening and interactive discussion about how recently-enslaved African Americans created an affluent community in Tulsa, Oklahoma that became known as “Black Wall Street.” 

Hilary runs a training and development business that educates others through writing, public speaking, and coaching. She is the author of several books and recently co-authored “The Burning: Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921,” a young adult adaptation of journalist Tim Madigan’s adult nonfiction book about the worst incident of racial violence in our nation’s history. She uses her expertise to help educators and leaders develop their skills in racial equity, diversity, and inclusion. She was inducted into the Class of 2021 Shaker Schools Alumni Hall of Fame

Behind the Scenes with Carter Bays

On Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 7:30 pm ET, Carter Bays, Class of 1993, will share his experiences navigating the world of television and how he came to co-create the popular sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. The sitcom garnered a huge following over its nine seasons and won ten Emmys. Most recently, Carter executive produced the companion series, How I Met Your Father, starring Hilary Duff, which will premiere on Hulu in January 2022. He is releasing his debut novel, The Mutual Friend, in June 2022. Carter was inducted into the Shaker Schools Alumni Hall of Fame in 2020. 

Registration is required. Donations from this event will benefit the Shaker Heights High School Theatre Arts Department.
