Chamber Orchestra Travels to New York

Dear Orchestra Supporter:

I am delighted to let you know that our Shaker Heights High School Chamber Orchestra has again been selected to compete in the National Orchestra Cup competition at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center on March 7, 2020. This prestigious invitation-only competition will feature ten high school orchestras from across the country. Our musicians will perform onstage at Lincoln Center for a national audience, receive a post-performance clinic from a competition judge, attend an awards ceremony and dinner cruise with the other participants, and enjoy sight-seeing in New York, including a New York Philharmonic concert and a Broadway show.

When our Chamber Orchestra first went to the Orchestra Cup in 2017, we were awarded the 2nd runner-up prize as well as the Forte Award, an award presented to the school orchestra program that best exhibits the values of musicianship, cooperation, and enthusiasm throughout the competition. We are incredibly excited for our students to again embrace this opportunity to perform in an internationally renowned venue and compete with the nation’s best high school orchestras. We are also profoundly grateful for the chance to represent Shaker Heights on a national stage. We are privileged and honored to represent the community that has supported us in our musical endeavors for so many years.

This trip presents a special opportunity, but also an unexpected expense. Individual students will pay about $785.00 to participate, and this amount is burdensome for some of our families. The students will hold several fundraisers, and we anticipate receiving assistance from the High School and the Shaker Schools Foundation. However, we need additional support, and I invite you to make a tax-deductible gift to the Foundation to help bridge that gap.  Remittance materials are enclosed for your convenience, or you may visit shaker.org/foundation.aspx to donate online.

Thank you for supporting our students as they embark on what is sure to be a memorable and transformative educational experience.

Sincerely,

Donna Jelen
