Learning the Ropes at Fernway
Make a DonationExploring Interests While Staying Active
Fernway students were encouraged to explore their interests and be curious during PE class with the Learnin’ the Ropes program led by Nick Woodward. Students were challenged to set new goals for themselves by jumping rope.
The Shaker Schools Foundation was happy to support this grant from Sean Morris, PE Teacher at Fernway. The grant included two assemblies and a 30-minute physical education takeover experience with Nick for each class in grades 3-5. Nick impressed the students and staff with high-flying jump rope sequences and inspiration. Nick is a powerful role model for young students and advocates for physical activity and accessibility to all.
The Impact
Following this experience, the 5th graders were challenged to write a scientific summary, a news story, or a creative story that accurately uses the forces and motion vocabulary learned during the unit as applied to the rope jumping experience.
The students were excited to receive a jump rope to take home provided by the Fernway PTO and a skill that will give them the confidence to grow, learn, and jump into a healthy future!
We are incredibly grateful to Nick Woodward from Learnin’ the Ropes and Sean Morris for bringing this program to Fernway.
The rope is an anywhere/anytime physical activity tool to build upon personal well-being, reflection and goal setting, confidence, competence, and development of passion/self.
