Alumni Help Celebrate the Class of 2020

student and tuffy
While this school year was certainly unlike any other in recent memory, we are proud of the way our students, teachers, staff, and families pulled together to continue learning from home. Although we were unable to celebrate student accomplishments in the usual way due to Covid-19, the Shaker Schools Foundation was delighted to help host several virtual celebrations in their honor, which can be viewed online.

On June 3, our graduating seniors attended a virtual commencement ceremony unlike any other! The graduates heard inspiring remarks from Shaker alumna Britta Wilson, Class of 1979, who is Vice President, Inclusion Strategies at Pixar Animation Studios. Britta shared with them her unofficial role as the welcoming committee as a student at Shaker Heights High School, and the path that led her to the role she has today. The students were also treated to a musical surprise from Michael McElroy, Class of 1985, who gathered together his fellow cast members from the Broadway production of RENT – the musical our students were unable to perform this past spring at Shaker Heights High School.

View the Commencement video; Michael’s message begins at minute 31 and Britta’s comments begin at minute 42. We thank them both for making this event special and memorable for our 2020 graduates, and we welcome our newest alumni!

Can You Help Connect Our Kids?

student at home

Like other communities all over the world, our Shaker students had to finish this school year at home.

To help our students with virtual learning, the District delivered more than 150 hotspots to the homes of Shaker students who lacked WiFi access. The Shaker Schools Foundation led a fundraising campaign to defray the considerable cost of closing the technology gap, and community members contributed generously.

Although the school year has come to a close, the Shaker Schools Foundation is committed to keeping students connected throughout the summer, and into the fall if necessary, so that students can remain engaged in learning and connect with peers safely. To help us support this ongoing need, we ask you to consider a tax-deductible donation in any amount to the Connect Our Kids Campaign. We thank you for your continued generosity to our students!

zoom meeting

We’d Love to Hear from You!

Send us your news so we can share it with others. Want to know what’s going on with your fellow classmates and Shaker grads around the world? Follow us on social media. We’d love to hear from you! During our time at home, Shaker grads are finding ways to connect with one another. In the beginning of May, the Class of 1998 enjoyed a virtual get together to talk about Celeste Ng’s (Class of 1998) adapted book to the big screen, “Little Fires Everywhere.” They are planning another Zoom call to talk about current issues. Football alumni are also gathering to reconnect through Zoom. Alumni MAC Scholars will meet virtually late summer/early fall. We want to help you gather your classmates virtually too. We are happy to offer information to help you find one another. Send us a message to get started!

Keep in touch with us by updating your contact information today! Also, please take a moment to complete a brief alumni survey to help us keep in touch and better target our communications with you. Your responses will be used only for this purpose, and will not be shared with any outside party or vendor.

Fernway playground construction

Excitement is Building for the Fernway Playground

A new playground area at Fernway Elementary School is taking shape, thanks to the support of many generous donors and a grant that the Shaker Schools Foundation secured from the equipment supplier. The enhanced playscape will serve Fernway students and the community at large. A special thank you to the many alumni who contributed to the Fernway Forward Fund to help make this possible!
